Building world-leading entrepreneurial nations:
place's where sustainable growth and innovation deliver benefits to all of society

ABOUT

Pioneered by a group of committed individuals, enterprises and organisations from across Scotland, CAN DO is an open source methodology of ecosystem building designed to accelerate system change and deliver improved economic, environmental and social value in an ecosystem.

The Ecosystem in question is the nation of Scotland. However this work is being done with a vision to pilot a model for the new economy that can be adopted in other parts of the world that are committed to building regenerative economies.

HOW IT WORKS

“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”
– Henry Ford

Ecosystem Forum

Regular (Quarterly) gatherings of the leaders of the different enterprise support organisations to continuously align and improve the ecosystem, identify areas of need and collaboration,  support each other to become more effective and practice the progressive culture needed to bring about systems change. The forum has two principle parts to it that work alongside each other, one with an more tactical 18 months to 2 year focus, the other with a more strategic  long term view 2 to 20 year focus.

Backbone

As Scotlands largest network of entrepreneurial leaders committed to enabling the entrepreneurial spirit to thrive in every part of society, ‘Entreprenurial Scotland’ will play the role of housing the core function/team that supports this work.

CAN DO Projects and Partners

With the collective vision and strategy set in the ecosystem forum and supported by the backbone, it is in the work done together where everything is brought to life. The most substantial of these projects is CAN DO Fest – a year long programme of activity that culminates in a festival of the new economy over three weeks in spring.

Origins

Taking into account the CAN DO framework the REAP team proposed that a backbone organisation is founded to coordinate the Collective Impact delivery of the REAP recommendations. It will have a relentless focus on improving the ecosystem for IDEs in Scotland. Its mission will be to foster innovation-driven entrepreneurship in Scotland through stakeholder collaboration and engagement.

CAN DO (The Backbone) recommended principles of operation:

Private funded, non-profit

Government endorsed but private sector led

Stakeholder representative leadership group

Major currency is work-in-kind

Initially supported by HIE/SE but transitioning to self-sustainability within two years

Network of stakeholder groups collaborating to promote conditions for IDE growth in Scotland

Ambitious – seeks to have significant impact

CAN DO Fest, a global festival of the new economy was created by the members of the ecosystem forum to gather the people who can help us bring this vision to life, as we celebrate our progress and explore the best models to accelerate system change and deliver improved economic, environmental and social value.

Three weeks of events delivered by self nominated organisations committed to the CAN DO agenda. Each event would be tailored to the different audiences that each organisation serves, and in their own way, each will contribute towards the shared mission of building a world-leading entrepreneurial nation.
